You’re wandering around a music festival and stop to watch a hoop dancer rocking out to whoever is on the stage. Their movements completely mesmerize you and you find yourself unmoving and completely in awe as the hooper continues. Differences in Hula Hoops

Depending on what your skill level is and what you’re using the hoop for will determine the type(s) of hoops you should pick up.

  • Beginner Hoops – These are typically made from larger tubing and are much heavier than professional dance hoops. The weight and size of these hoops make it easier for hoop dancers to learn the flow of the hoop. Sizes range from 36”-42” in diameter. Smaller hoops being good for petite users and the larger ones for taller individuals. Beginner hoops work well as exercise hoops since they’re usually around 3-5 pounds. Stand in front of the TV hooping for 10 minutes a day and you’ll have yourself a flat belly in no time. For serious.
  • Professional Dance Hoops – The majority of professional dance hoops are made from a light tubing called PolyPro. It’s much lighter than the bigger tubing so most of these hoops will weigh around one pound. They’re generally smaller in diameter as well. Dancers using these types of hoops are required to have the skill to keep the hoop up and spinning around their waist.
  • Glow/Fire Hoops – These are fun toys, like… really fun toys. If you’re ready to dazzle the crowd with your hoop skills, then grab a LED (glow) or fire hoop. They come in a variety of sizes and are usually lighter than the heavier beginner hoops. LED hoops are made with clear polypro and have a string of LED lights build inside of them. The fire hoops can be made from metal or plastic tubing and have several spines coming out with wicks on the end of them to help keep the fire away from the body.

Where Can I Buy Hoops?

It’s incredible how popular hoop dancing has become. Before… you had to make your own hoop. Now, you can find them pretty much anywhere, including Walgreens! Granted, Walgreens does sell the light cheap ones, but they’re still hoops right? If you’re just starting out, we recommend picking up one of these hand-made beauties from Wildest Whimsy. If you’re ready for a more legitimate hoop, Hoopologie sells all kinds of fancy PolyPro hoops (they even sell the materials so you can make your own!). And last but not least, if you’re really wanting to step up your hoop game and get a dope ass LED or fire hoop, check out Denver based Astral Hoops.

So… as you can see. It’s literally as easy as picking up the right hoop for you and figuring out where you want to learn to hoop dance in Colorado. You’ve got all the options!
