Unfortunately, we’ve got some bad news for the Kratom lovers out there. The herbal pain reliever will be banned in the U.S by the end of September.

Headed West will retail kratom through Thursday, September 29th in our Greenwood Village and Englewood locations while supplies last. The last day to purchase kratom through our online store is Thursday, September 22nd. As of Friday, September 30th Headed West will abide by the new federal law and will no longer be retailing kratom products.

To dive a bit more into the details, the DEA has decided to classify some chemicals used in Kratom as a schedule 1 drug in the United States. The ban will begin September 30th and covers all products including Kratom. This is a serious classification – it means Kratom is being listed with pretty hardcore drugs despite its mellow nature. A schedule one classification is the most restrictive under federal law. You can learn more about this at www.dea.gov.

Headed West is truly bummed about this and we want to make sure our customers have all the information needed to understand the consequences of the new decision. Since Kratom will be classified as a schedule 1 drug, it will carry the criminal sanctions that are applicable (including felony jail for distribution and possession). Kratom itself is not being outright banned – the active ingredients are. These two chemicals are called mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine and, by banning them, the DEA has successfully banned both synthetic and plant versions of Kratom.

You don’t have to take this lying down. If Kratom is important to you, please advocate for it and join the fight to have this classification withdrawn. A quote from http://kratommarchdc.com/ explains so much better than we could (and encourages everyone to share and get involved):

“We have spoken with many people who have been advised by lawyers that the most effective way to combat this is by having each individual who has a care for this cause to contact your congressman and explain the action going on and the benefits you have had with Kratom, how much the take away of this herb would affect your life, never the less make everyday people felons at month’s end. What we are trying to accomplish is anyone in State legislation, (congress) do what is called a “demand Letter” to the DEA on this issue. Congressional action is needed to show the lies and false science issued about this plant in order to protect big pharmaceutical company. It is important to call in a polite manner and just share your story in a positive way.”

There’s a petition going around to encourage the DEA to drop the ban and you can sign it to help. They are currently, at the time of this blog’s posting, 16,877 signatures away from getting a required response from the White House. If you have more of an outdoors activist spirit, there’s a march to the White House on Sept. 13th at noon. Kratom lovers and advocates are also being asked to support the cause by contacting the DEA, and you can find more information here.

We hate to lose an amazing product like Kratom. We’re huge supporters of its healing properties and seriously hope Kratom advocates can turn this thing around. Please do your part to keep Kratom off the schedule 1 drug list.

In the meantime, we have to emphasis again that our stock of Kratom will be taken offline by Thursday, September 22nd and out of stores by Thursday, September 29th.

Good luck, advocates!
